I have 3079 mb ram memory, am running vista, and still it takes forever to open programs. Just opening a file with thumbnail images takes a good 30 secs to a min. I have run multiple malware scans, anti-virus scans….have cleaned all my temp files and unused registry entries. Why does my computer still run so slow?

Chances are you have a tons of programs running in the background every time you turn on your PC. Edit the list of programs that run at startup by going:
Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Run
In the Run command type in MSCONFIG. On the right you should see the "Startup Tab". This will show you the list of all the program that run each time your computer boots up. Try to uncheck as many as you can from that list (newest software is on the bottom) and then restart.
Should help quite a bit.
There is a helpful article on slow computer and its solutions.Have a look on it.It may help you to resolve your slow computer problem.

Have you defragged lately? Run a diskcleanup and defrag. If you dont have enough free space, the built in defragger deoesnt do a decent job. You can download the 30 day trial version of Diskeeper and set it on auto mode. It defrags very well even under low free space.

You have received a lot of answers to your question already. Usually a computer runs slowly once you have been browsing for a while and get a lot of internet temp files on your system. I usually use Webroot’s Window Washer to clean all that. Also if you have installed many programs on your system, each time your hard drive adds another program you are going to notice it running a bit slower. I recently removed a ton of programs I hardly ever run anymore and my system runs 30% faster. If you have a worm or (trojan) it can cause your system to run slower. Make sure you are not running too many programs at once. I had a firewall running, an anti virus running, a ram booster, ThreatFire (System watch), Anonymous Cookie, Net-Monitor, and a few more programs. Every program you run simoultaneously will s-l-o-w d-o-w-n your system. I suggest you try this: Run ADVANCED SYSTEM CARE: Here is the link for the FREE program download:

I hope this helps, there are many programs that will help your system run smoother with this program…even a defrag pgm.

Increase Virtual Memory and buy a faster hard disk.
Never use a cleaner to fix your computer unless you like reinstalling your operating system. Sooner or later they will screw up. You need to ‘thaw out’ your desktop. Press Ctrl>Alt >Delete all at the same time. The Task Manager will open. Scroll down until you see explorer.exe and click on it. Then click End Process. Ignore the warning. Click File at the top then click New Task. Type in explorer.exe and click ok. That should do it.
try windows xp.its very light and ideal for ppl having problems with vista.
or maybe the problem is with your vista
Because you’re having many antivirus/spyware scanner at the same time.
When you open a files or a link, the real time protection of AV have to do a lot of thing to check the security of the file.
This action will take some time of CPU to Process.
May be your CPU can process well but the hardisk has to read many time by many request to check security of the file from many AV -> It will slow down your PC,but cause the HDD is one of most slowest component of your PC..
I suggest you download Ccleaner to clean your hard-drive of unnecessary files and run it. You can download it from their site. Just Google it! It can work wonders!!!!! Install Ccleaner, run it, then reboot to free up your RAM. And maybe downgrade back to XP before it’s too late!!!
Well, the first version of Vista was slow. That was before SP1, which is what I have. SP1 fixed major problems and made it faster. Also, it’s always a good idea to have double the specs of what Microsoft recommends. You have 1 GB less of RAM than double what’s recommended. I have 4 GB and Vista runs well. You can download SP1 for free. Here is a link:

u probly have to many procces running u should delete them delete anyprograms u dont need or want and if that dont help u might have to re-install windows cus u can get invalid files
What about your hard drive?
It’s good to have it at least 10% empty.
It’s also good to not have too many processes running.
And have you defragmented lately?
Could also be Vista-based problems/ Windows corruptions.
Below can help you speed up your pc:
1. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup
2. Temporarily close Quick Launch:
Right-click on the Taskbar, click Toolbars, deselect Quick Launch
3. Open My Computer
Right-click on C:
Click Properties
Click Tools, select Error Check (check all and fix), when finished click defrag & run.
4. Click Start, Run ipconfig -renew (type ipconfig space renew)
5. Restart. Right-click on Taskbar, click Toolbars, select Quick Launch to restore
All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take.
-Note: Games and videos are mostly graphics. Graphics create large files. If these suggestions don’t help, you might need more memory.
Last, if you haven’t cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC’s resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Does a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.
