Just run the clean install
formatting and a fresh install are always the best choice.
It takes alot of time and effort to manually Clean up the desktop, registry, applications, etc.
The best thing to do is run the xp cd at startup and once it loads, delete the partition on which xp home was on. Then create a new partition in its place and install xp pro on it.
