Good freeware program to speed up computer?

I have a HP laptop with WIndows Vista and I think somewhere in the neighborhood of 500MB of RAM, maybe 1 GB, not sure how to check. Some of my programs are running very slowly and I was hoping to find a program that would speed up my computer.

I currently have DSL, and my computer seems to run slower every day. Sometimes it take a long time to open programs, and some programs don’t respond. What do I need to do to either remove somethings or change programs so that my computer will run faster?

How to fix slow computer bootup?

Everytime i install a program into my computer my computer becomes very slow in bootup. When it boots up the explorer appears but the system tray programs arent in place. I dont have that much programs in bootup all i have is my firewall and my antivirus that boots up and this hasnt become a problem before i installed a program. The program isnt a virus and i have enough ram (512 mb). my firewall is zone alarm and i use AVG anti virus Free. it takes about an hour or 2 juss to boot up my whole computer and i checked msconfig already to check if there are any startup problems. I checked regiestery problems with CCleaner and i defraged my harddrives yet it still wont work. There are no spyware on my computer i scanned for viruses. Can anyone help?

When I start computer, I cannot open any window and my e-trust antivirus is not working for 4-8 minute. After that all functions are OK. Problem started one week ago.. There is no viruses.
I have windows xp professional
