I have a Toshiba laptop and my CD/DVD drive suddently stopped being recognized by the computer. I was working with some DVD movie maker software to transfer old movies to DVD’s and now it’s like I don’t even have DVD drive. It worked a couple of days ago. Ran a diagnostic and it failed. Is there something I can do?
Pinnacle is the manufacturer of the software for the movie maker and they say that this is a common problem and says to change a particular item in the registry. I am very afraid to change anything in registry.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

You may also have damaged the drivers. Go to the Toshiba web site and download the latest drivers, install them, then reboot.
If that doesn’t help, look in your device manager (from Control Panel) and see if the DVD drive is disabled in your hardware profile.
If a diagnostic check failed, the drive might indeed be dead. If possible try and reseat the drive (it may say in the manual) or call tech support to find out about obtaining a new drive. You could also try toshiba’s website if they have any new updates or support on there.
If the controller board is fried, you need a new controller board, or motherboard, I guess. I doubt some cable has come loose or disconnected, but it’s possible. The problem with a laptop is that as far as I know it’s not as easily openable to check what’s wrong. But it definitely sounds like a hardware error. If the drive comes out easily enough, it’s not that much money to replace it, cheaper than buying a new laptop. I don’t think the software broke your drive, I think that’s just a coincidence. But who knows?
