I think i ve a virus that adds a .exe extension to files. I try to access the registry but then it restarts, can’t access msconfig either, can’t install any thing as it closes every window anytime one opens. Am at a loss bcoz I have data on the drive and I can’t format the whole disk, the virus lauches when i access the d partition. Please if i could know which virus this is and which antivirus can actually clean the files even if to delete them. I can I wipe the c drive and reinstall windows; but then i will need an antivirus that will eliminate the virus from the D drive. That is if there is no other way around it.

Why do you not have an antivirus program installed and operating? It is the height of arrogance to assume that one can operate on the internet today without getting viruses and/or spyware. What you have is one or the other, possibly both. You don’t need to repartition your drive, or get into msconfig or the registry, you need to clean up your hard drive. The best combinations are all free, so there is no excuse for not getting them and using them.
Get SpyBot Search & Destroy to safely remove spyware. Best of all, it’s free. After installing it, immunize the computer against over 16,000 known pieces of spyware. Then run a full bot check and remove everything it finds using the Fix Selected Problems tab. Keep it updated and run it weekly to keep your computer free of this stuff. Then get Ad-Aware also from download.com and run it the first time doing a Full System Scan. Thereafter, run a Smart Scan daily.

Keep them both updated and use them.
Then get Avast 4-Home antivirus and install it. It protects not only your hard drive, but email (other than Yahoo).

try going into safemode, click f8 when you boot up your computer, when the logo of the computer name brand shows up click f8 so you dont miss the menu, and then try to access things there like a virus scan, also do research from another computer with the symptoms of your computer and see if you can find a solution or a file that may be a virus and delete it, if that doesnt work, use your cd that installs windows xp into your comp, all your programs and old files will still be on there but at least you can run it, the virus may still be on it but at least you will be able to run the comp and do a scan and possibly delete it, if you still cant log on as the reg user after you install it, try going on safe mode with the answers i gave you before, if nothing like that works, try asking a technician because it may cost a lot but at least you get your computer back if you pay for it now in a few years in wont matter because your comp will be fixed and you know what to watch out for
I would go to http://www.infectedornot.com or http://www.bitdefender.com. They have the latest virus definitions, besides, you will check your computer for anyother kind of malware for free.
Afterwards reboot your pc and enter in safe mode (F8) and run the antivirus, if you don’t have one, download AVG Free Edition
