I have a dell optiplex gx 260 – new hd 500gb, 2gb memory. 2 cd/dvd writers. This was working fine. I reloaded the os and then restored the data 2 months ago. 9 days ago turned on the computer, saw the dell splash screen with options of F2/12 then splash screen went off like normal and all I had was a blinking prompt in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Booted to diagnostics – all passed. Swapped power supplies. same result wouldn’t boot from hd. Reformatted hd, reloaded windows and minimum software – office, anti-virus, adobe stuff, firefox. Added users. Worked great.
Next day wouldn’t boot again. Followed same process of reformatting hd and loading os and sw. This time made ghost image. I have reloaded the ghost image 5 times and the computer runs great for a day. But it will not boot again after a day. I have even swapped hard drives.
Any idea what the problem is?
Running Windows XP SP3

Hi there. Using the net and answers from the Yahoo community, i’ve now got a perfectly formatted PC running XP Pro.

It’s got an;
300GB SATA HD (for XP and progs) (defragged all good)
1TB SAMSUNG SATA HD (for storage)
Intel Core 2 CPU 6600@ 2.4ghz (2 CPU’s)
Gigabyte motherboard 965P DS3P
4GB of Ram
SB Live 24bit (yeah, it’s crap i know, but sound makes me sad)
NVIDIA GEFORCE 8800GTS 640mb

So everything should be hunky dory right? Time to play ma games right?
Wrong
this piece of crap can’t run my cool games properly, i mean, even OBLIVION stutters.
Call of Duty 4? 5 frames per second buddy.

In the meantime i’ve been playing freaking KOTOR, great game btw, but 5 years old!

so theres a problem, my awesome computer, runs like crap.

So my friends, help me before i just go out to the couch and turn on the PS3 and put my finger up at PC gaming forever.

i’d love if someone can point me in the direction of some diagnostics/benchmarking software so i can find the evil bottleneck! THANKS
by the way, i’d appreciate it if you could star me so i get mooooore lurve!

When I am ready to install Windows XP Pro I want to partition my new drive but Windows does not recognize the correct size. How do I partition the HD into 3 partitions?

If you answer includes" Partition Magic" or SP2, STOP. You do not understand my question. Thank you

Hi, TLDR below.

Hard drive took a little spill off the desk the other day. I plugged it in, a few beep noises came FROM the HD, not the computer, and now it isn’t loading up when I try going into it. I hear the disc(s) inside running smoothly and there isn’t any abnormal sounds (other than the beeping when I first plugged it in).

Every once in awhile, it will boot up very, very slowly. Other times, it will show the make shift directories I made inside the Terabyte but nothing inside them. And as of now, it will say it is unable to find or load up the HD.

So what sort of problems am I looking at here? Is there any way I can back up some of the criteria on the HD? Is there a type of diagnostic software I can use, buy, download to scan for problem and solutions?

It is under warranty, but I would hate for me to ship it out and lose all my files without at least doing my best to fix it myself. I plan on reformatting it if I can get an unfortunate solid answer of not being able to salvage my stuff. If that doesn’t work, then I suppose I’ll just send it in.

TLDR version: HD is beeping, discs sounds like they’re running fine. HD not booting up. Has weird nature to it, sometimes it loads (very slowly) sometimes directory doesn’t exist. Need help
