FROM A WEBSITE ON SFC: To protect your computer from old system files, Microsoft created a special service that is built into the operating system. This service monitors your system files, and if one is replaced or deleted, ICS will automatically restore the system file. SFC works in conjunction with a utility called Windows File Protection that keeps the system file cache: (%Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache) uppdated with the newest Microsoft Approved files as they are installed on your system. I prefer to use the system backup for the ability to roll back to a former configuration however. To manually invoke the system file checker, be sure you have administrative access then go to the command prompt and type: sfc /scannow The system will immediately begin to check all the current system files and restore the cached approved copies. You may be asked to insert the Windows CD as well during the restore. IS THERE ANY SOFTWARE AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD SO THAT I DONT'T HAVE TO USE THE CD?

On the internet, I have found a large number of photo restoration / repair software programs, but I dont know which is best / easiest to use with Microsoft Windows XP. Of the following, which would be best, especially for a Forrest Gump type of person.

1) Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 / 7.0
2) Roxio Creator 2009
3) ACDSee Photo Power Pack 2009
4) ACDSee Photo Manager
5) Sony Photo Go Editing Software

Which is the best value: price versus ease of use / understanding?

I am looking for a microsoft registry cleaner but have heard that regcure is unsafe from this site http://www.registrycleanersrated.com but have heard at other sites its the best. This site says it can damage your PC, so now im confused on what registry cleaning software is the best. Thanks

I pasted the text below of the Windows Security Center popup that eventually requires me to spend for a repair download. The download site is last. Do I need to spend this money to repair it, repair it some other way for free, or ignore it? Edward

Hi everyone, i am new here. I have a problem with mi windows Xp with a message of some unable to find register in:

systemroot\system32\config\DEFAULT

I searched in google in another computer and i found this instructions from microsoft website.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q307545

I needed a windows xp cd (i got it from a friend) and with the Recovery Console i had to type:

md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

and then some other instructions for the safe mode in windows.
However, when i type
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

the console respond with “cannot copy file”

Fine, i searched google again and found this page:

http://forums.techarena.in/windows-xp-support/886894.htm

Someone wrote that in that case I should go direct to type

copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

cause there is no “default” file in the config directory. But when i do that, there is a message “Do you want to replace default file (Y/N)?”

I am confused, there is a default file, but i can not copy to a .bak file?
What do i do now? do replace the file? would there be a problem in the future for doing that?
I can not use windows Xp, not even with the safe mode.
Thanks for any help you can give me, and sorry for my bad english.
