How do I clean up by computer to make it run faster?

I type an entire sentence befor I see it when I am using my yahoo mail. When I look in my "add or remove programs" I see about 20 updates for Windows XP could this be part of the problem there are a couple updates per month… Other with what?
Thats- otherwise what?

Is it alright to install kaspersky in a flashdrive and use it to clean an infected pc?

a friend’s pc is infiltrated by trojans and it is in "deathbed" condition and it is most advisable now to reformat. problem is, due to the trojans, he can’t back-up his files. is it alright to do that so somehow it can get "cleaned" (that way we may be able to back-up) before totally reformatting?

is there a free app that will clean files, speed up performance, clean registry somewhere out there?

Windows Vista clean install doesn't boot up first priority?

I’m currently running on Windows XP. I want to install Windows Vista. When I installed Windows XP, the setup ran when I first restarted the computer. I tried doing that with Vista, changing the priority to the DVD drive. It totally skips the DVD drive and just boots up my hard drive? Does anybody know why?

I would like to clean my computer registry safely,but I read if you mess up even one letter it can wreck your computer.I have McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 which has Quick Clean on it.Has anyone else used this and is it safe to use?There is also the option of cleaning the cache.Is this safe to do?
