I have a HP Pavillion DV8000T notebook that i purchased from HP directly. The notebook is 13 months old and out of warranty. My hard drive failed and I will need to have it replaced. This is the second time my hard drive has failed (previous instance was during the warranty period) My options are:
(1) Use HP and pay 0 – this includes a new hard drive and installation of MS Windows XP Media edition. It comes with only 90 day warranty.
(2) Buy the hard drive myself – I have Windows XP software. I would have my office IT desk install the hard drive and the Operating System. Cost 0.
My Concern is:Will I be able to get all the drivers that I need to get the most of my machine. This is a high end machine but I am extremely disappointed with HP service. There is only a 90 day warranty on a 0 repair which represents over 33% of what I paid for the entire machine. Since the hard drive has failed twice already-I figure if it fails again, I will buy new notebook.

go with the 2nd option.
HDD is sensitive to shock so take care of bumping the laptop and avoid carrying it while the laptop is on.
Best thing to do to prepare for your new drive is to be sure to download all the drivers you need and burn them onto a CD before you install a new hard drive. If youre not going to do it yourself $100 is a good price to pay for your IT to do it. I usually charge $150 up but that includes all Windows updates, latest drivers, software and printer installation too.
Dont let HP charge you $500 with only a 90 day warranty. Sounds like refurbished drives! Here’s some drives with 3 year warranties which it sounds like you may need with the luck you’ve been having with hard drives. Not sure if yours is a CTO thou.

Go with purchasing your own hard drive.
Your HP machine should have come with restore CD’s which will include the OS, as well as the drivers.
2 hard drive failures in less than a year? I can see where you are disappointed…..I would be too

When was the last time the hard disk was replaced?? Wasn’t there any warranty for the part replaced?? Although the entire machine is out of warranty, there should be a new warranty for the part replaced. Check the receipt.
You should be able to get all of your drivers directly from the HP website. I would suggest downloading them and putting them on disk, so you always have them.
Buy the hard drive yourself and have it installed…or install it yourself. Most of the drivers you need will be automatically loaded with XP. Those drivers you don’t get through XP will be on the HP OR COMPAQ support page. What you have is really an easy fix and your total cost should be the replacement hard drive….. you can put it in yourself very easily.
