I have disassemble my hard drive because it has making funny noises.Is it safe to use alcohol to clean the disks and the head?

My computer has been acting weird lately, freezing up and missing the little icons in the bottom right of the screen that usually pop up right away (msn messenger icon, weatherbug, avg anti virus…etc.) I tried to do a system restore and everytime i try it says incomplete restore. what other things can i try to make my computer work better (faster, not freeze, etc.)

is there safe way a novice pc guy like me can clean up his system registry? don’t like the idea of downloading one of those programs to do it for you, sounds risky

i have a pop up blocker, anti virus, firewall, spyware detector and it still pops up. its not a website its just a small annoying window that pops up telling me i have errors in my registry and i need to go to their website to fix my registery any help!!!!
